Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
DivisionDivision is the process of splitting a number into equal parts or groups. It tells us how many times one number is contained within another.12 ÷ 3 = 4 means 12 items are split into 3 equal groups, with 4 items in each group.
DividendThe dividend is the total number or amount that is being divided or split. In 24 ÷ 6 = 4, the number 24 is the dividend.
DivisorThe divisor is the number by which the dividend is divided; it tells us how many equal groups to make or the size of each group. In 24 ÷ 6 = 4, the number 6 is the divisor.
QuotientThe quotient is the result or answer obtained from a division problem. In 24 ÷ 6 = 4, the number 4 is the quotient.
Inverse OperationsInverse operations are operations that undo each other. Multiplication and division are inverse...

Core Formulas
Division by One
$$a \div 1 = a$$
Any number divided by 1 is equal to the number itself. This means dividing by 1 doesn't change the value.
Division by Itself
$$a \div a = 1 \quad (a \neq 0)$$
Any non-zero number divided by itself is equal to 1. If you divide a quantity into groups of its own size, you get one group.
Zero Divided by a Number
$$0 \div a = 0 \quad (a \neq 0)$$
Zero divided by any non-zero number is always zero. If you have nothing to share, each person gets nothing.
Inverse Relationship with Multiplication
$$\text{If } a \times b = c \text{, then } c \div b = a \text{ and } c \div a = b$$
This rule allows you to use your multiplication fact knowledge to solve division problems and to check your division answers.
