Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Division FactA basic division problem and its answer, often derived from multiplication facts (e.g., 12 รท 3 = 4 because 3 ร 4 = 12).20 รท 5 = 4 is a division fact.
DividendThe number being divided in a division problem.In 30 รท 5 = 6, the dividend is 30.
DivisorThe number by which another number is divided. In 30 รท 5 = 6, the divisor is 5.
QuotientThe result obtained when one number is divided by another. In 30 รท 5 = 6, the quotient is 6.
DivisibilityThe ability of one number to be divided by another number without leaving a remainder.24 is divisible by 4 because 24 รท 4 = 6 with no remainder.
Mental MathPerforming mathematical calculations in your head without the aid of a calculator or written work.Quickly calculating 40 รท 5 = 8 without writing it down.

Core Formulas
Divisibility Rule for 2
A number is divisible by 2 if its last digit is an even number (0, 2, 4, 6, or 8).
This rule helps quickly identify if a number can be divided into two equal groups without any leftover. For example, 78 is divisible by 2 because its last digit is 8.
Divisibility Rule for 3
A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
This rule is useful for larger numbers. Add all the digits of the number; if that sum is a multiple of 3, then the original number is also a multiple of 3. For example, for 123, 1 + 2 + 3 = 6, and 6 is divisible by 3, so 123 is divisible by 3.
Divisibility Rule for 5
A number is divisible by 5 if its last digit is 0 or 5.
This rule is straightforward and helps identify numbers that can be grouped into fiv...
