Aligning Decimal Points
When adding or subtracting money amounts, always align the decimal points vertically.
This ensures that you are adding or subtracting dollars with dollars and cents with cents (tenths with tenths, hundredths with hundredths). You can add zeros to the end of numbers to make them have the same number of decimal places if needed. For example, $5.20 + $3.7 should be written as $5.20 + $3.70.
Performing the Operation
Add or subtract the numbers as you would with whole numbers, starting from the rightmost digit, and carrying over or borrowing when necessary.
