Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
FractionA number that represents a part of a whole or a part of a collection. It is written as a numerator over a denominator. In the fraction \(\frac{3}{4}\), 3 is the numerator (parts we have) and 4 is the denominator (total parts in the whole).
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction, indicating how many parts of the whole are being considered. If you eat \(\frac{1}{2}\) of a sandwich, the '1' is the numerator, meaning you ate 1 out of 2 equal parts.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction, indicating the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.If a pizza is cut into 8 slices, and you have \(\frac{3}{8}\) of it, the '8' is the denominator, showing there are 8 total slices.
Mixed NumberA number consisting of a whole number and a pro...

Core Formulas
Adding/Subtracting Fractions with Like Denominators
\(\frac{a}{c} + \frac{b}{c} = \frac{a+b}{c}\) or \(\frac{a}{c} - \frac{b}{c} = \frac{a-b}{c}\)
When adding or subtracting fractions that already have the same denominator, simply add or subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same. Always simplify your answer if possible.
Adding/Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators
1. Find a common denominator (LCM). 2. Convert fractions to equivalent fractions with the common denominator. 3. Add or subtract numerators.
Before adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators, you must find a common denominator (often the Least Common Multiple, LCM) and rewrite each fraction as an equivalent fraction with that common denominator. Then, proceed as with like d...
