TermDefinitionExample
FractionA number that represents a part of a whole or a part of a collection. If you cut a cake into 4 equal slices and eat 1, you've eaten 1/4 of the cake.
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction, which tells you how many parts of the whole are being considered. In the fraction 3/5, the number 3 is the numerator, meaning you have 3 parts.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction, which tells you the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.In the fraction 3/5, the number 5 is the denominator, meaning the whole is divided into 5 equal parts.
Proper FractionA fraction where the numerator is smaller than the denominator, representing a value less than one whole.1/2, 3/4, 7/10 are all proper fractions.

Core Formulas
Converting Mixed Number to Improper Fraction
$a \frac{b}{c} = \frac{(a \times c) + b}{c}$
To convert a mixed number to an improper fraction, multiply the whole number (a) by the denominator (c), then add the numerator (b). Keep the original denominator (c). This is useful when you need to perform operations like multiplication or division with mixed numbers.
Converting Improper Fraction to Mixed Number
$\frac{N}{D} = Q \frac{R}{D}$ (where $N$ is the numerator, $D$ is the denominator, $Q$ is the quotient, and $R$ is the remainder when $N$ is divided by $D$)
To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient becomes the whole number, the remainder becomes the new numerator, and the denominator stays the same. This helps sim...
