Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
DecimalA way to write numbers that are not whole, using a decimal point to separate the whole part from the fractional part (tenths, hundredths, etc.).0.5 (five tenths), 1.25 (one and twenty-five hundredths)
FractionA way to represent a part of a whole or a part of a set, written as a numerator over a denominator.1/2 (one half), 3/4 (three quarters)
NumeratorThe top number in a fraction, which tells you how many parts of the whole you have.In 3/4, the numerator is 3.
DenominatorThe bottom number in a fraction, which tells you how many equal parts the whole is divided into.In 3/4, the denominator is 4.
Place Value (Decimals)The value of a digit based on its position in a number, especially important for digits after the decimal point (tenths, hundredths, thousandths)....

Core Formulas
Converting a Fraction to a Decimal
$\frac{a}{b} = a \div b$
To change a fraction into a decimal, divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number). This gives you the decimal equivalent.
Converting a Decimal to a Fraction
$0.d_1d_2 = \frac{d_1d_2}{100}$ (for hundredths) or $0.d_1 = \frac{d_1}{10}$ (for tenths)
To change a decimal into a fraction, write the digits after the decimal point as the numerator. The denominator will be a power of 10 (10 for tenths, 100 for hundredths, 1000 for thousandths) corresponding to the last decimal place. Then simplify the fraction if possible.
