Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the dividend and divisor within a word problem. Simplify division problems by canceling an equal number of zeroes from the dividend and divisor. Use basic division facts to solve simplified problems. Solve one-step and two-step word problems involving the division of numbers ending in zeroes. Check their division answers using multiplication. Write their final answer in a complete sentence that addresses the question in the word problem. A candy factory made 3,000 lollipops! If they put them into 50 giant jars, how many lollipops are in each jar? ๐Ÿญ Let's find out! In this tutorial, you will become a division detective! We will learn a special trick to quickly solve word problems with big numbers that end in zeroes. This skill makes divisio...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample DividendThe total number that is being divided or split into groups. In the problem 1,200 รท 30 = 40, the dividend is 1,200. DivisorThe number that you are dividing by. It tells you how many groups to make or the size of each group. In the problem 1,200 รท 30 = 40, the divisor is 30. QuotientThe answer to a division problem. In the problem 1,200 รท 30 = 40, the quotient is 40. Multi-digit NumberA number that has more than one digit.Numbers like 15, 70, and 250 are all multi-digit numbers. Basic FactA simple division problem that you can often solve from memory, usually from your multiplication tables. The basic fact for 480 รท 60 is 48 รท 6 = 8.

Core Formulas

The Zero-Canceling Rule If `a0...0 รท b0...0`, you can cancel the same number of trailing zeroes from both `a` and `b` before dividing. When your dividend and divisor both end in zeroes, you can make the problem simpler. Cross out one zero from the dividend for every one zero you cross out in the divisor. For example, 4,500 รท 50 becomes 450 รท 5. Checking with Multiplication `Quotient ร— Divisor = Dividend` To make sure your answer is correct, you can use the inverse (opposite) operation of division, which is multiplication. Multiply your answer (the quotient) by the number you divided by (the divisor). The result should be the number you started with (the dividend).
