Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
DividendThe total number that you are dividing up. It's the 'whole' amount you start with.In the problem 'Share 120 cookies among 10 friends', the dividend is 120.
DivisorThe number you are dividing by. It's the number of equal groups you are making, or the size of each group.In the problem 'Share 120 cookies among 10 friends', the divisor is 10.
QuotientThe main answer to a division problem. It tells you how many are in each group or how many groups you can make.In 120 รท 10 = 12, the quotient is 12.
RemainderThe amount 'left over' after you have made as many equal groups as possible.If you divide 121 cookies by 10, you get 12 with 1 left over. The remainder is 1.

Core Formulas
The Steps of Long Division
Divide โ Multiply โ Subtract โ Bring Down
This is a memory aid for the four repeating steps in the long division process. You divide a part of the dividend by the divisor, then multiply your answer by the divisor, subtract the result, and finally bring down the next digit from the dividend to repeat the process.
Checking Your Work
Dividend = (Divisor ร Quotient) + Remainder
This formula helps you check if your division answer is correct. Multiply the divisor by the quotient and then add the remainder. The result should be your original dividend.
