Identify the rule of an increasing number pattern by finding the difference between consecutive terms.
Use addition to accurately find the next term in an increasing sequence.
Complete a number pattern by filling in one or more missing terms.
Clearly describe the rule of a given pattern using mathematical language, such as 'The rule is to add 10'.
Create their own increasing number pattern when given a starting number and a rule.
Solve word problems that involve completing or extending an increasing number pattern.

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
PatternA set of numbers or objects that follow a specific, repeating rule. The sequence 5, 10, 15, 20, 25... is a pattern.
SequenceAn ordered list of numbers.4, 8, 12, 16 is a sequence.
TermEach individual number in a sequence. In the sequence 10, 20, 30, the number 20 is the second term.
Increasing PatternA pattern where each term is greater than the term before it. The numbers are getting bigger.7, 14, 21, 28 is an increasing pattern.
RuleThe operation (like adding a certain number) that tells you how to get from one term to the next.In the pattern 3, 6, 9, 12, the rule is 'add 3'.
DifferenceThe result of subtracting one term from the next term. In a simple increasing pattern, the difference is the rule.In the pattern 50, 55, 60, the difference is 55 - 50 =...

Core Formulas
Finding the Rule (The Common Difference)
Rule = Term_{2} - Term_{1}
To find the rule for a simple increasing pattern, subtract the first term from the second term. You can also subtract any term from the one that comes right after it to check your work.
Finding the Next Term
Next Term = Last Term + Rule
Once you know the rule, add it to the last known term in the sequence to find the very next term.
Finding a Missing Term
Missing Term = Previous Term + Rule
To fill in a blank in the middle of a sequence, add the rule to the term that comes directly before the blank space.

Challenging
A student analyzes the pattern 250, 275, __, 325. Their work is shown below:
Step 1: Find the rule: 275 - 250 = 25. The rule is 'add 25'.
Step 2: Find the missing term: 325 + 25 = 350.
Which step contains the mistake?
A.Step 1 is wrong; the rule is not 'add 25'.
B.Step 2 is wrong; they added to the wrong term.
C.Both Step 1 and Step 2 are wrong.
D.There is no mistake in their work.
