Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Add two or more money amounts, correctly aligning the decimal points. Subtract money amounts, including problems that require regrouping across zeros. Multiply a money amount by a single-digit whole number. Divide a money amount by a single-digit whole number, placing the decimal point correctly in the quotient. Solve one- and two-step word problems involving the four operations with money. Estimate sums and differences of money to check if their answers are reasonable. Correctly write final answers with a dollar sign and a decimal point. You just earned $15.00 for chores and want to buy a comic book for $4.25 and a toy for $8.99. Do you have enough money? 💰 Let's find out! In this lesson, we will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide...

DifferenceThe amount left after you subtract one number from another. The difference between $10.00 and $6.50 is $3.50. ProductThe answer you get when you multiply numbers. If you buy 3 candy bars that cost $1.50 each, the product is $4.50 ($1.50 x 3). QuotientThe answer you get when you divide one number by another. If you split $10.00 between 2 people, the qu...

Core Formulas

Aligning Decimals for Addition and Subtraction $a.bc + d.ef$ or $a.bc - d.ef$ When you add or subtract money, you MUST line up the decimal points vertically. This makes sure you are adding dollars to dollars and cents to cents. Bring the decimal point straight down into your answer. Placing the Decimal for Multiplication $a.bc \times d = e.fg$ When multiplying a money amount by a whole number, first multiply as if there were no decimals. Then, count the number of digits after the decimal point in your money amount (there will always be 2 for cents). Place the decimal point that many places from the right in your answer. Placing the Decimal for Division $a.bc \div d = e.fg$ When dividing a money amount by a whole number, set up the problem using long division. The v...
