Introduction & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
Identify the basic subtraction fact within a larger problem (e.g., see 7-3 in 70-30).
Subtract multiples of 10 (e.g., 80 - 50) using knowledge of single-digit subtraction.
Subtract multiples of 100 (e.g., 800 - 500) using knowledge of single-digit subtraction.
Describe the pattern when subtracting numbers with increasing place values (e.g., 9-2, 90-20, 900-200).
Solve subtraction problems involving thousands by applying patterns from smaller place values.
Mentally calculate the difference between multiples of 10, 100, and 1000.
What if you had 500 shiny stickers and gave 200 to a friend? How could a simple math fact like 5-2 help you solve it instantly? 🤔
In this lesson, we'll become math detectives! We will discover a cool pattern that makes subtr...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (ones, tens, hundreds). In the number 452, the 4 is in the hundreds place and means 400.
Basic FactA simple subtraction problem using single-digit numbers.9 - 5 = 4 is a basic fact.
Multiple of 10A number you get when you multiply 10 by another whole number. These numbers always end in 0.20, 50, and 90 are multiples of 10.
Multiple of 100A number you get when you multiply 100 by another whole number. These numbers always end in 00.300, 600, and 800 are multiples of 100.
PatternSomething that repeats in a predictable way.The pattern in 2, 4, 6, 8 is 'add 2'.
DifferenceThe result of a subtraction problem.In 10 - 4 = 6, the difference is 6.

Core Formulas
Subtracting Tens Pattern
If a - b = c, then a0 - b0 = c0
When you subtract multiples of 10, you can first solve the basic fact using the front digits, then add a zero to the end of your answer.
Subtracting Hundreds Pattern
If a - b = c, then a00 - b00 = c00
When you subtract multiples of 100, you can solve the basic fact with the front digits, then add two zeros to the end of your answer.
General Place Value Pattern
The number of zeros in the difference matches the number of zeros in the numbers being subtracted.
This is a quick way to check your work. If you are subtracting hundreds (like 700-200), your answer should also be in the hundreds (500).
