Learning Objectives
Correctly align four-digit numbers by place value for subtraction.
Subtract four-digit numbers without regrouping.
Subtract four-digit numbers with regrouping (borrowing) in one or more places.
Subtract across zeros in a four-digit number.
Use addition as an inverse operation to check their subtraction answers.
Solve one-step word problems that require subtracting four-digit numbers.
Imagine you have 5,280 coins in your video game and you spend 1,750 on a new power-up. How many coins do you have left? 🪙
In this lesson, we will learn how to subtract big numbers with four or more digits. It's just like the subtraction you already know, but with a few more columns! This is a very important skill for solving problems with bigger numbers in school and i...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
MinuendThe first number in a subtraction problem. It's the whole amount you are starting with.In 8,975 - 1,234, the minuend is 8,975.
SubtrahendThe number that is being subtracted or taken away from the minuend. In 8,975 - 1,234, the subtrahend is 1,234.
DifferenceThe answer to a subtraction problem.In 8,975 - 1,234 = 7,741, the difference is 7,741.
Place ValueThe value of a digit based on its position in a number (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). In the number 4,567, the 5 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 500.
Regrouping (or Borrowing)Trading one from a higher place value for ten of the next lower place value. For example, trading 1 hundred for 10 tens.To solve 42 - 18, you regroup 1 ten from the 4 tens to make the 2 ones into 12 ones.

Core Formulas
Subtraction Algorithm
Minuend - Subtrahend = Difference
Always write the minuend on top and the subtrahend below it, making sure to line up the place values (ones with ones, tens with tens, etc.). Subtract one column at a time, starting from the right (the ones place).
Regrouping Rule
1 Thousand = 10 Hundreds; 1 Hundred = 10 Tens; 1 Ten = 10 Ones
If the top digit in a column is smaller than the bottom digit, you must 'borrow' from the place value to its left. When you borrow, you reduce the digit on the left by 1 and add 10 to the digit in your current column.
Checking with Addition (Inverse Operation)
Difference + Subtrahend = Minuend
To check if your subtraction is correct, you can add your answer (the difference) to the number you subtracted (the subtrah...
