Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify and label fractions with a denominator of 10 on a number line. Understand that a number line from 0 to 1 can be divided into 10 equal parts called tenths. Place fractions like 1/2 and its equivalent fraction 5/10 on a decimal number line. Use a decimal number line to visually compare the size of two fractions. Explain why one fraction is greater than, less than, or equal to another using the number line as evidence. Relate decimal notation (e.g., 0.1, 0.2) to its corresponding fraction (e.g., 1/10, 2/10). Have you ever shared a chocolate bar cut into 10 squares? 🍫 How can we use a line to show who got a bigger piece? In this lesson, we will learn how to use a special number line, called a decimal number line, to see and compare fractions. This...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample Number LineA straight line with numbers placed in their correct order. It helps us see the distance between numbers.A ruler is a type of number line we use for measuring. FractionA number that shows a part of a whole. It has a numerator (the top number) and a denominator (the bottom number). The fraction 3/10 means 3 parts out of a whole that is divided into 10 equal parts. Decimal Number LineA number line where the space between each whole number (like 0 and 1) is divided into 10 equal parts. The line from 0 to 1 has marks for 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and so on, up to 1.0. TenthOne of ten equal parts of a whole. It can be written as the fraction 1/10 or the decimal 0.1.If you have a candy bar with 10 squares, one square is one-tenth of the bar. Core Formulas

Position on the Number Line Rule For two fractions on a number line, the fraction to the right is always greater. When you place two fractions on a decimal number line, look at their positions. The one further away from 0 (to the right) is the bigger fraction. Comparing Fractions with the Same Denominator If you have $\frac{a}{10}$ and $\frac{b}{10}$, and $a > b$, then $\frac{a}{10} > \frac{b}{10}$. When two fractions have the same bottom number (denominator), the fraction with the bigger top number (numerator) is greater. On a number line, it will be further to the right. The Halfway Point Rule $\frac{1}{2} = \frac{5}{10} = 0.5$ The fraction 1/2 is exactly halfway between 0 and 1. On a decimal number line, this is the same spot as 5/10, which we can also write...
