The Hook

Have you ever really wanted something, like a new toy or to stay up later? You ask, and the answer is just 'no.' It can feel unfair. But what if there was a way to ask that worked better? It is not about arguing or whining. It is a skill you can learn, and you probably use it every day without even knowing.

The Real Talk

Any time you try to agree on something with another person, you are negotiating. You do it all the time. The Story

Sofia, who is 10, found a small, friendly stray cat in her yard. She really wanted to keep it. Her dad's first answer was a quick 'No. Pets are a lot of work and cost money.' Instead of getting upset, Sofia decided to make a plan. She researched how much cat food costs and figured out she could pay for it with her allowance. She made a chart listing all the chores she would do for the cat, like feeding it and cleaning its litter box. She presented her plan to her dad, showing him the chart and her budget. Her dad was surprised. He still said no to keeping the cat forever, but he agreed to a win-win deal. They could foster the cat for a month to see if Sofia kept all her promises. Sofia realized that having a good plan was much better than just asking and hoping.
