The Story
Arjun saw his friend Jaylen sitting alone after school, looking sad. Arjun ran over, ready to tell a funny joke to cheer him up. "What's wrong?" Arjun asked. Jaylen mumbled, "My dog is really sick." Arjun's first thought was to talk about his own dog, but then he remembered to try just listening. Instead, he asked, "Oh no. What did the vet say?" Jaylen explained everything, and Arjun just nodded and listened. He didn't interrupt or try to fix it. After a few minutes, Jaylen took a deep breath. "Thanks for listening," he said. "I feel a little better just talking about it." Arjun realized that sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do for a friend is just be quiet and listen.
