Grammar Rules & Patterns
Pattern 1: Jouer à + SportRule: To talk about playing most sports with a ball or games, you use the structure jouer à (to play at/a) [zhoo-AY ah] + [name of sport]. Be careful! If the sport is masculine, like 'le soccer' (soccer), the combination 'à + le' (at + the) turns into 'au' (at the) [oh].Example: Je joue au soccer (I play soccer) [zhuh zhoo oh sok-ER].Example: Tu joues au hockey (You play hockey) [too zhoo oh ok-AY].Pattern 2: Aimer + ActivityRule: To say you like doing something, you use the verb aimer (to like) [eh-MAY] followed by another verb in its infinitive form (the basic 'to' form of the verb, like 'nager' (to swim) or 'danser' (to dance)).Example: J'aime nager (I like to swim) [zhem nah-ZHAY].Example: Elle aime danser (She likes to dance) [el em dahn-SAY].
