Grammar Rules & Patterns
Rule 1: The Days are MasculineIn French, all the days of the week are masculine nouns. That means we use the article 'le' (the) [luh] in front of them. For example, we say le (the) [luh] lundi (Monday) [luhn-DEE], le (the) [luh] samedi (Saturday) [sahm-DEE].Rule 2: Talking About a HabitTo say you do something every week on a certain day, you use 'le' (the) [luh] + the day. For example, "Le (The) [luh] samedi (Saturday) [sahm-DEE], je joue au hockey" means you play hockey every Saturday.Rule 3: Days Don't Start with a Capital LetterUnlike in English, the days of the week in French are not capitalized, unless they are at the very beginning of a sentence. We write: J'aime le (I like) [zhem luh] mardi (Tuesday) [mar-DEE].
