The Agreement Rule A pronoun must agree with its singular antecedent in both number and gender. When you replace a singular noun, the pronoun you choose must also be singular. It must also match the gender of the noun (he/him/his for masculine, she/her/hers for feminine, it/its for neuter/inanimate objects). The Case Rule The pronoun's case must match its grammatical function in the sentence. Use a subjective pronoun (he, she, it) if it acts as the subject.
