Maintain the Original Tense Inside Quotations
When using a direct quotation, you must not change the verb tenses inside the quotation marks.
A direct quote is a piece of evidence. You must preserve it exactly as it was written or spoken. If the original text says, 'I *feel* cold,' your sentence must include 'I *feel* cold,' even if your signal phrase is in the past tense (e.g., 'The character *said*, 'I *feel* cold.'').
