Key Rules & Conventions
General Rule: Adding -s
Most nouns form their plural by simply adding -s to the singular form.
Use this rule for the vast majority of English nouns. It's the default pluralization method.
Nouns Ending in -s, -x, -z, -ch, -sh
If a noun ends in -s, -x, -z, -ch, or -sh, add -es to form the plural.
This rule helps with pronunciation, as adding just -s would be difficult to say. It creates an extra syllable.
Nouns Ending in -y
If a noun ends in -y preceded by a consonant, change the -y to -i and add -es. If a noun ends in -y preceded by a vowel, simply add -s.
This rule distinguishes between words like 'city' (consonant + y) and 'key' (vowel + y).
