Key Rules & Conventions

General Rule for Regular Plurals Most nouns form their plural by adding -s. Nouns ending in -s, -x, -ch, -sh, or -z form their plural by adding -es. Use this rule for the vast majority of English nouns. The -es ending helps with pronunciation for words that would be difficult to say with just an -s. Plurals of Nouns Ending in -y and -o If a noun ends in a consonant + -y, change -y to -i and add -es. If it ends in a vowel + -y, just add -s. For nouns ending in -o, most add -s, but some common ones add -es (e.g., hero, potato, echo). Pay close attention to the letter preceding the -y or -o.
