The 'Close Proximity' Rule for Misplaced Modifiers
Place modifiers as close as possible to the word or phrase they are intended to modify.
This rule ensures that the reader immediately understands what is being described. If a modifier is too far away, it might accidentally describe something else, leading to confusion.
The 'Clear Subject' Rule for Dangling Modifiers
Ensure that the word or phrase being modified by a participial or infinitive phrase is clearly stated as the subject of the main clause, usually right after the modifying phrase.
If the subject performing the action of the modifying phrase is not present or is unclear, the modifier 'dangles' without anything to attach to. You often need to add or rearrange the subject.
