Key Concepts & Vocabulary

Verb TenseVerb tense tells us when an action happened: in the past, present, or future. She *walked* (past) to school. She *walks* (present) to school. She *will walk* (future) to school.
Inappropriate Shift in TenseThis occurs when the verb tense changes suddenly and without a logical reason within a sentence or paragraph, making the writing confusing.Yesterday, I *went* to the park, and then I *eat* my lunch. (Shift from past 'went' to present 'eat')
Consistent TenseMaintaining the same verb tense throughout a sentence or paragraph when describing actions that happen at the same time or in a continuous sequence.Yesterday, I *went* to the park and *ate* my lunch. (Consistent past tense)

Key Rules & Conventions
Maintain Tense Consistency
Within a single sentence or paragraph, keep the verb tense consistent unless there is a clear and logical reason for a shift in time.
If you start describing events in the past, continue using past tense for all events that occurred in that past sequence. Similarly, if you're describing present actions, stick to present tense.
Logical Time Progression
Shift verb tense only when the time of the action genuinely changes.
If you are moving from describing a past event to a present observation, or from a present action to a future plan, then a tense shift is appropriate and necessary. The key is that the time itself has shifted.
Narrative Tense Choice
For fictional narratives, choose a primary tense (usually past or present) and stick to it...

A student wrote this summary for a research report: "The ancient Egyptians were a fascinating culture. They *build* massive pyramids and *develop* a complex system of writing. Their society lasted for thousands of years. Today, many people *visit* the pyramids in Egypt." Why are the shifts to "build" and "develop" particularly problematic for a historical report?
A.They are minor grammatical errors that do not affect the reader's understanding.
B.They make the report sound too much like a fictional story instead of a factual one.
C.They are acceptable because they make the history feel more immediate and exciting.
D.They incorrectly present historical facts that occurred entirely in the past as if they are happening now, which undermines the report's factual credibility.

When writing a literary analysis essay about a novel, the standard convention is to discuss the plot events using the present tense (e.g., "The character *confronts* his fear"). Why is maintaining this consistent "literary present" tense CRITICAL in this specific type of writing?
A.It proves to the teacher that the writer has actually read the book recently.
B.It makes the essay shorter and therefore easier to write and grade.
C.It is the only way to write about books, as all authors use the present tense in their novels.
D.It treats the events of the literary work as if they are always happening within the world of the text, creating a consistent and stable framework for analysis.
