The Direct Object Test for Transitivity
To determine if an action verb is transitive, ask 'what?' or 'whom?' immediately after the verb. If you get a noun or pronoun as an answer that receives the action, the verb is transitive.
This rule helps you identify the direct object. If a direct object exists, the verb is transitive. Remember, only action verbs can be transitive.
No Direct Object = Intransitive
If an action verb does not have a direct object (meaning it doesn't answer 'what?' or 'whom?' after it, or the word following it is an adverb or prepositional phrase), then the verb is intransitive.
