Key Rules & Conventions
The Clear Antecedent Rule
A pronoun must refer to one, and only one, specific antecedent.
Use this rule to check your pronouns. If a pronoun like 'he,' 'she,' or 'it' could point to more than one noun, your sentence is probably vague and needs to be fixed.
The Dialogue Name-Check Rule
In a conversation, if a pronoun could refer to the speaker or the listener, use a name instead.
This is especially important when two characters of the same gender are talking. Using their names avoids a 'he said/he said' mix-up and keeps the conversation clear.
The Proximity Rule
Place pronouns as close to their antecedents as possible.
