Key Rules & Conventions

Commas in a Series item 1, item 2, and item 3 When a character lists three or more things in their dialogue, use a comma to separate each item. The comma before the 'and' is called an Oxford comma and helps make the list clear. Commas in Dates Month Day, Year When a character says a full date, use a comma to separate the day number from the year. If the date is in the middle of the sentence, also place a comma after the year. Commas in Places City, State/Country When a character names a city and its state or country, use a comma to separate them. If the place is in the middle of the sentence, also place a comma after the state or country.
