A preposition must always be followed by a noun or pronoun, which is its object. It cannot stand alone.
Prepositions work like a team: the preposition introduces the object, and together they form a prepositional phrase. If a word like 'in' or 'out' doesn't have a noun or pronoun immediately after it, it's likely acting as an adverb, not a preposition.
Identifying the Prepositional Phrase
A prepositional phrase starts with the preposition and ends with its object. To find the object, ask 'what?' or 'whom?' after the preposition.
