Key Rules & Conventions

The Basic Plural Rule: Add -s Base Word + s For most nouns, simply add an -s to the end of the word to make it plural. The Hissing Sounds Rule: Add -es Base Word + es If a noun ends in s, x, z, ch, or sh (sounds that hiss or buzz), add -es to make it plural. This makes the word easier to say. The Consonant + Y Rule: Change y to -ies Base Word (change y to i) + es If a noun ends with a consonant followed by the letter y, change the y to an i and then add -es.
