Key Rules & Conventions
The 'Show, Don't Tell' Rule
Authors show a character's personality through their Speech, Thoughts, Effect on others, Actions, and Looks (S.T.E.A.L.).
Pay attention to what characters say and do. These are the biggest clues an author gives you. Don't just wait for the author to tell you a character is 'sad'; look for clues like crying, sighing, or speaking in a quiet voice.
The Action + Dialogue Formula
Action Clue + Dialogue Clue = Strong Inference
The best understanding of a character comes from combining clues. If a character's actions and words match, you can be very confident about their traits. If they don't match, it might mean the character is hiding their true feelings.
