Key Rules & Conventions

The Action-Verb Rule Show feelings through strong actions. Instead of saying a character is happy, describe them 'bouncing', 'skipping', or 'beaming'. Use strong verbs to describe what the character's body is doing to reveal their emotion. The Dialogue Rule Let the character's words reveal their personality. What a character says and how they say it tells us a lot. A brave character might shout, "I'll handle this!" while a shy character might whisper, "Um, maybe we should go..."
