Key Rules & Conventions
The 'Who and What' Check
Find the Subject (Who is doing it?) and the Verb (What are they doing?).
To see if two sentences mean the same thing, first check if they have the same 'doer' and the same 'action'. If the person doing the action is different, the meaning is different.
The 'When' Check
Look at the verb to see if the action happened in the past, is happening now, or will happen in the future.
Sentences only have the same meaning if the action happens at the same time. 'She played' is different from 'She will play'.
The 'Details' Check
Check the describing words (adjectives and adverbs) to make sure all the details match.
