Key Rules & Conventions
The Matching Rule
The reflexive pronoun must match the subject.
If the subject is singular (like 'he'), the pronoun must be singular ('himself'). If the subject is plural (like 'they'), the pronoun must be plural ('themselves'). You can't mix them up!
The Same Person/Thing Rule
Use a reflexive pronoun only when the subject and the object of the verb are the same.
Use a reflexive pronoun when the person doing the action is also the person receiving the action. For example, in 'She helped herself,' 'she' is doing the helping and receiving the help.
