Key Rules & Conventions

The Alphabetical Order Rule All entry words in a dictionary are listed in A-B-C order. To find a word, you must know its first letter, then its second, then its third, and so on. This helps you know which section of the dictionary to look in. The Guide Word Rule Your word will be on a page if it comes alphabetically between the two guide words at the top. Look at the top of the page. If your word fits between the first guide word and the second guide word, you are on the right page. If not, keep flipping. The Best Fit Rule If a word has multiple meanings, use the sentence it's in to choose the definition that makes the most sense. Read all the numbered definitions.
