The 'Picture It' Rule Visualize the sentence in your head with each preposition choice. When you have choices like 'in', 'on', or 'under', close your eyes and imagine the scene. Which picture makes the most sense? A bird can be 'on' a branch, but it's probably not 'in' a branch. The 'Where, When, or How' Question Rule A preposition helps answer questions like 'Where?', 'When?', or 'In what direction?'. Look at the sentence and see what question the preposition is answering. For 'The keys are on the table,' the preposition 'on' answers the question, 'Where are the keys?' The Time Rule: In, On, At Use IN for long periods (months, years)....
