The 'Mouse and the Box' Test
A mouse can go ON the box, IN the box, UNDER the box, AROUND the box, NEAR the box.
This is a fun trick to remember many common prepositions. If you can imagine a mouse doing it in relation to a box, it's probably a preposition of place.
The Preposition + Object Formula
Prepositional Phrase = Preposition + (describing words) + Object (Noun/Pronoun)
A preposition is almost never alone. It needs an object to complete its job. Look for the noun or pronoun that follows the preposition to find the object.
Ask 'What?' or 'Whom?'
To find the object, ask a question: [Preposition] + 'what?' or 'whom?'
After you find a preposition, ask this question. The answer will be the object. For 'The...
