Alphabetical OrderPutting words in order based on the sequence of the alphabet (A, B, C...).The words `ant`, `bee`, `cat` are in alphabetical order.
First Letter RuleThe first step in alphabetizing. You look at the very first letter of each word to decide its place. To order `dog`, `fish`, `bird`, you look at `d`, `f`, and `b`. The correct order is `bird`, `dog`, `fish`.

Key Rules & Conventions
Look Left to Right, One Letter at a Time
Start at the first letter of each word. If they are the same, move to the second letter. Keep moving one letter to the right until you find a difference.
Use this rule for every list of words. It's the main strategy for alphabetizing. Don't skip ahead or look at the last letter; the first different letter you find is the one that matters.
The Shorter Word Comes First
If a shorter word's letters are identical to the beginning of a longer word, the shorter word is listed first.
Use this when you have words like `car` and `carpet`. Since `car` is shorter and its letters start the word `carpet`, `car` goes first.
