Key Rules & Conventions

The First Letter Rule To put words in alphabetical order, you must look at the first letter of each word. This is the most important rule. For now, ignore all the other letters in the word and just focus on the very first one to decide the word's place in line. The Alphabet Line-Up Rule A word whose first letter comes earlier in the alphabet goes first in the list. Think of the alphabet as a long line with 'A' at the front and 'Z' at the back. A word starting with 'C' will always come before a word starting with 'P' because 'C' is closer to the front of the line.
