Key Rules & Conventions

Vowel Change Rule Some nouns change their inside vowels to become plural. Look for nouns where the middle of the word changes. For example, 'oo' might become 'ee', or 'a' might become 'e'. The '-en' Ending Rule A few special nouns add '-en' to the end to become plural. This rule is rare, so it's best to memorize the words that use it, like 'child' and 'ox'. The No-Change Rule Some nouns stay the exact same whether they are singular or plural. You use the same word for one or for many. You can tell if it's plural by the other words in the sentence, like 'one sheep' vs. 'ten sheep'.
