Key Rules & Conventions

The Vowel-Change Rule Some singular nouns change their middle vowels to become plural. Look for words like 'man', 'woman', 'foot', 'tooth', and 'goose'. To make them plural, you change the vowel sound inside the word. For example, 'oo' becomes 'ee' and 'a' becomes 'e'. The No-Change Rule Some nouns are the same whether they are singular or plural. This rule is common for some types of animals. You use the same word for one of them as you do for a whole group. Examples include 'sheep', 'deer', and 'fish'.
