The 'Look Around' Rule Read the words before and after the word you are looking at. Use this rule to find hints! The other words in the sentence give you clues about the word's meaning, which helps you find a synonym that fits. The 'Swap Test' Rule Try replacing the original word with the possible synonym. After you find a possible synonym, swap it into the sentence. If the sentence still makes sense and has the same meaning, you've found a good synonym!
