Key Rules & Conventions
The Subject Rule
If the pronoun is DOING the action, use a subject pronoun.
Ask yourself, 'Who is doing the verb?' If the answer is the pronoun, choose from this list: I, you, he, she, it, we, they.
The Object Rule
If the pronoun is RECEIVING the action, use an object pronoun.
Ask yourself, 'To whom or for what is the action being done?' If the answer is the pronoun, choose from this list: me, you, him, her, it, us, them.
The 'Cover-Up' Trick
When you have a name and a pronoun (like 'Leo and I'), cover up the name and 'and'. Read the sentence with just the pronoun to see if it sounds right.
This is the best trick for sentences with more than one person. For 'Leo and (I/me) played,' cover 'Leo and'....
