Key Rules & Conventions

The '-er' Rule (for comparing two) Base Adjective + er When you compare two things, add '-er' to the end of most short adjectives. Like 'tall' becomes 'taller'. The '-est' Rule (for comparing three or more) Base Adjective + est When you compare three or more things, add '-est' to the end of most short adjectives. Like 'tall' becomes 'tallest'. The 'y' to 'i' Rule Change 'y' to 'i', then add '-er' or '-est'. If an adjective ends in 'y', like 'happy', change the 'y' to an 'i' before adding your ending. 'Happy' becomes 'happier' or 'happiest'.
