Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify and articulate at least six common types of analogical relationships (e.g., synonym, antonym, part-to-whole). Deconstruct a given word pattern analogy to determine the precise relationship between the source pair. Apply an identified analogical relationship to a target word in order to select the correct corresponding term from a set of options. Construct original analogies that demonstrate a clear and consistent word pattern relationship. Analyze the use of analogy as a rhetorical device in excerpts from world literature. Evaluate the validity of a given analogy by assessing the strength and consistency of its internal logic. Ever notice how a director is to a film what a conductor is to an orchestra? 🤔 Our brains are wired to see these hidden...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample AnalogyA comparison between two things, typically for the purpose of explanation or clarification, that shows a relationship or pattern.Just as a sword is the weapon of a warrior, a pen is the weapon of a writer. Source PairThe first pair of words in an analogy that establishes the specific relationship or pattern. In the analogy `FISH : SCHOOL :: WOLF : PACK`, the source pair is `FISH : SCHOOL`. Target PairThe second pair of words in an analogy that must mimic the relationship of the source pair.In the analogy `FISH : SCHOOL :: WOLF : PACK`, the target pair is `WOLF : PACK`. Relationship TypeThe specific logical connection between the words in a pair. Common types include part-to-whole, cause-and-effect, and synonym/antonym.The relationship in `BRANCH : TREE` is &#03...

Key Rules & Conventions

The Core Formula: A : B :: C : D The relationship between A and B must be the same as the relationship between C and D. This is the fundamental structure of all word pattern analogies. 'A is to B as C is to D.' Your goal is to identify the relationship in the first pair (A:B) and find the word that completes the second pair (C:D) with the exact same relationship. Rule of Consistency The relationship type, word order, and parts of speech should be consistent between the source and target pairs. If the source pair is `NOUN : ADJECTIVE`, the target pair should follow suit. If the relationship is 'antonym', the target pair must also be antonyms. The order matters: `HOT : COLD` (antonyms) is not the same as `COLD : HOT`. The Specificity Principle Choose...
