Semicolon Rule for Independent Clauses
Independent Clause + ; + Independent Clause.
Use a semicolon to join two closely related independent clauses that are not connected by a coordinating conjunction. This shows a stronger, more direct connection between the ideas than a period would.
Colon Rule for Introductions
Independent Clause + : + List / Explanation / Quotation.
Use a colon after a complete independent clause to introduce something that directly explains or illustrates it. The part of the sentence before the colon must be able to stand alone.
