The Complete Sentence Formula
Independent Clause = Subject + Verb + Complete Thought
Use this formula as a diagnostic tool. To be a complete sentence, a group of words must contain at least one independent clause. If any of these three components are missing, you likely have a fragment.
Three Methods for Fixing Run-ons
1. Period: Independent Clause. New Independent Clause.
2. Semicolon: Independent Clause; related Independent Clause.
3. Comma + FANBOYS: Independent Clause, [for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so] Independent Clause.
When you have two independent clauses, you must separate or join them correctly. Use a period for a full stop, a semicolon to link two closely related ideas, or a comma followed by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) to show a specific relationship....
