Key Rules & Conventions
The '-ing' Form Rule
A gerund is always a verb's present participle form, ending in '-ing'.
This is the first visual clue. When you see a word ending in '-ing', you should immediately consider if it might be a gerund. However, not all '-ing' words are gerunds, which leads to the next rule.
The Noun Function Test
A gerund or gerund phrase will always function as a noun.
To test if an '-ing' word is a gerund, try replacing it (or the entire phrase it leads) with the pronoun 'it' or 'something'. If the sentence still makes grammatical sense, the word is a gerund.
