Key Rules & Conventions

The Comma Rule for Nonrestrictive Elements Use commas to set off nonrestrictive elements from the rest of the sentence. If the element appears in the middle of the sentence, use a comma before and after it. If it appears at the end, use a comma before it. This signals to the reader that the information is supplementary. The Removability Test If you can remove the element without changing the fundamental meaning of the sentence, it is nonrestrictive and requires commas. Read the sentence aloud without the element in question. If the core message remains intact and clear, the element is nonrestrictive. If the sentence becomes confusing, vague, or its meaning changes, the element is restrictive and does not get commas.
