Introduction & Learning Objectives
Learning Objectives
Analyze and deconstruct complex analogical relationships, including abstract, functional, and symbolic connections.
Identify at least six distinct types of analogical relationships (e.g., cause/effect, part/whole, degree, agent/tool).
Apply knowledge of world literature and historical contexts to solve culturally specific analogies.
Formulate original, multi-step analogies that demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of vocabulary and conceptual relationships.
Evaluate the validity and precision of a given analogy, articulating the reasoning behind the judgment.
Utilize analogical reasoning to strengthen analytical arguments in literary essays and research papers.
Ever noticed how a single metaphor in a novel can suddenly make a complex character unders...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary
TermDefinitionExample
Analogical RelationshipThe specific logical, functional, or conceptual connection between the first pair of words in an analogy, which must be precisely mirrored in the second pair.In 'FISSION : FUSION :: SEPARATION : UNION,' the relationship is one of antonyms or opposing processes.
Abstract RelationshipA connection based on ideas, qualities, or concepts rather than physical or functional attributes. In 'COURAGE : VIRTUE :: PESSIMISM : OUTLOOK,' the relationship is 'A is a type of B'.
Symbolic RelationshipA relationship where one term represents a broader idea or concept culturally associated with the other. In 'DOVE : PEACE :: SCALES : JUSTICE,' the relationship is 'A is a symbol of B'.

The 'Parts of Speech' Parallelism Rule
The grammatical form of the words in the second pair (C:D) must match the form of the words in the first pair (A:B).
If the first pair is NOUN : VERB, the correct answer must also be NOUN : VERB. This helps eliminate grammatically inconsistent options quickly before analyzing the meaning.
The 'Specificity' Principle
The relationship...
