Key Rules & Conventions

The 'Can I...?' Test Ask yourself, 'Can I ______?' Put the word in the blank. If you can do it, it's an action verb! For example: 'Can I run?' Yes! So 'run' is an action verb. 'Can I apple?' No. So 'apple' is not an action verb. Find the Doer, Find the Doing 1. Find who the sentence is about. 2. Ask what they are doing. In the sentence 'The fish swims,' first find who it's about (the fish). Then ask, 'What does the fish do?' It swims! 'Swims' is the action verb.
