What is a Computer Made Of?

Introduction to the different parts of a computer (monitor, keyboard, mouse, tower).

What you'll learn

  • Identify at least three different parts of a computer, like the monitor, keyboard, and mouse, from a set of pictures with 100% accuracy.
  • Explain in their own words what each of the three identified parts (monitor, keyboard, mouse) helps us do when using a computer.
  • Match at least 4 out of 5 computer parts (e.g., monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU, speaker) to their correct definitions in a matching activity.

Introduction & Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives Identify the four main parts of a computer: CPU, memory, storage, and motherboard. Explain the job of the CPU as the computer's 'brain'. Describe the difference between memory (short-term) and storage (long-term). Define the role of the motherboard as the part that connects everything. Sort common computer parts into 'input' and 'output' categories. Trace the path of a simple command, like a mouse click, through the computer. Have you ever wondered what's inside your computer or tablet? It's like a secret city full of tiny, super-fast workers! 🏙️ Today, we're going to be detectives and look inside a computer! We will learn about the main parts, called hardware, and discover what each part does to help you...

Key Concepts & Vocabulary

TermDefinitionExample CPU (Central Processing Unit)The 'brain' of the computer. It does all the thinking, follows instructions, and tells all the other parts what to do.When you click to make a character jump in a game, the CPU is the part that figures out how high and how fast to jump. Memory (RAM)The computer's short-term memory or temporary workspace. It holds the information the computer is using right now. When you are building with digital blocks, the blocks are held in memory. If the computer turns off, the memory is wiped clean! Storage (Hard Drive)The computer's long-term memory, like a closet or a library. It saves and keeps your files, games, and pictures even when the computer is off. After you finish your digital block castle, you 'save' it to stor...

Core Syntax & Patterns

The Input-Process-Output Cycle Input -> Process -> Output This is the main job of a computer. First, you give it information (Input). Next, the CPU 'thinks' about it (Process). Finally, the computer gives you a result (Output). The Teamwork Rule Motherboard + CPU + Memory + Storage = A Working Computer None of the main parts can work by themselves. They must all be connected to the motherboard to work together as a team to run your programs. Memory vs. Storage Rule Memory is for NOW. Storage is for LATER. Use this to remember the difference. Memory (RAM) is a temporary workspace for what you're doing right now. Storage is a permanent place to save your work for later.
